Fork Restaurant's owner Ellen Yin and Chef Eli Kulp have recently opened High Street on Market, a charming cafe offering hearty-yet-refined breakfast and lunch options that are poised to capture the hearts of Philadelphians. Situated adjacent to Fork in the Old City neighborhood, this space, which once housed Fork, Etc., has seating for twenty or so diners, who order at the sleek counter in the morning, and receive table service at lunch. The menus are posted on chalkboards in a flawless font, which is the first clue that this place pays attention to detail.

Breakfast beverages include Rival Brothers coffee, tea and OJ, and the food choices range from unusual savory pastries (such as the "Red Eye" Danish with smoked ham, gruyere and coffee gravy), to creative breakfast sandwiches (like pastrami, spiced hash, roaster peppers and onions, Russian dressing and a farm egg) on homemade kaiser rolls, to elegant sweet bites (a la the clevery named Choux-fly with molasses cream and blackberry jam in a cream puff shell). The homemade breads are the stars of the show, with a number of gorgeous specimens available for purchase by the loaf. These breads combine an impossible pairing of chewy, dense exterior and interiors with the perfect soft crumb, and come in varities rarely seen on the average bakery shelf: buckwheat cherry, vegetable ash, roasted potato, and more. The flavors and textures are wonderful enough to eschew butter, although cultured, daisy-yellow butter is available should you choose to indulge.

The deliciousness continues at lunch with snacks, sandwiches, pizzas, salads that go well above and beyond the usual stuff of cafe menus. Duck meatballs on seeded semolina, an autumn panzanella salad with squash, kale and fruit, and ribollita soup are just a few highlights among many other promising items. Dinner service will begin in October, which is sure to feature more knockout dishes.

We get the feeling that High Street on Market will emerge as one of the new brunch and power lunch hot spots, so get on over there to check it out before the secret is out!

Michelle Dixon and Lindsay Pennock will be rectifying a grievous oversight with the opening of 70 Acre Brew Co. in Sherwood Park later this spring.

“It’s something we’ve discussed a lot over the years,” says Dixon, who with Pennock owns the new brewery and taproom at 310, 6000 Buckingham Drive. “The craft beer scene has been growing in Alberta, but we hadn’t seen anything specifically come out of Strathcona County or Sherwood Park. We wondered why that would be, and decided to take action.”

Both veterans of the hospitality industry, Pennock and Dixon began planning for the brewery about three years ago. The two were well on the way with 70 Acre when the pandemic hit, so instead of hunkering down and waiting, they shifted the focus away from the taproom and dining area towards the distribution side of things, purchasing a canning line and a labeller. It’s been a long hard road, but on April 5 the first brewing took place. By the end of the month they’ll be shipping their initial canned offerings to retail liquor stores in the Sherwood Park area, where they plan to concentrate for the time being.

And while we’re still waiting on Vernick Fish, what we do have is his breakfast (and lunch) restaurant open inside the Comcast Technology Center, offering fresh bakery items, yogurt parfait, smoked salmon and buckwheat crepes, crab timbale and tableside pour-overs. With the clarity of 20/20 hindsight, I’m somewhat amazed to realize how much breakfast has always meant to me.

While my friends gobbled bowls of Froot Loops and Lucky Charms in the morning, as a young lad I worked on perfecting my scrambled eggs (creamy, but with just the hint of a crust), and a properly arranged and proportioned bagel with lox and cream cheese. There also was much internal debate over whether the bagel should be toasted or not, plain or onion, with a slice of red onion or not. The complications were downright Talmudic.

Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate the joys of eggs Benedict consumed with a well-veggied Bloody Mary…and the virtues of pancakes versus waffles. And I’m surely not alone in my obsession with the first meal of the day, especially here in Southern California, where restaurants that offer breakfast only abound. (They often offer lunch as well, but it’s clearly an afterthought, paling compared to the joys of brunch.)

The breakfast-only phenomena is especially notable in the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys. But I think they’re at least equaled, if not eclipsed by the Long Beach area — by hot spots like The Breakfast Bar, The Local Spot, The Blackbird Café, Starling Diner and The Pan (which also serves dinner, but it’s breakfast that’s the signature).

And then, just a tad to the north, Artesia offers some of the best breakfasts around. This isn’t just Little India — it’s the Big Muffin, thanks to great destinations like the No Toro Café and the Off Street Café.

The name No Toro Café (11818 Artesia Blvd., Artesia, 714-499-7969, is actually a polite version of “No Bull Café,” which the restaurant says is the driving concept behind this “military owned and operated” mini-mall breakfast and lunch shop. It’s stripped down like, to use a military analogy, K-Rations used to be, and MREs became — just the essential dishes. But in this case done very well. It skews heavily to breakfast, with a lot of egg dishes, and some properly outlandish griddle items.

There’s a pile of Belgian-style waffles, heavy with whipped cream, that gets oohs and aahs as they emerge from the kitchen — people stopping to gape and ogle, as well they should. The raspberry pancakes are, simply speaking, things of beauty — soft and sweet with layers of flavor that you keep digging into. This is food that’s hard to resist, no matter how committed you are to your low-carb diet.

Getting even more orchidaceous, there are banana pecan-cinnamon pancakes. And getting back to basics, there’s plain buttermilk pancakes, which are also served on the side, as an alternative to toast or English muffins

The choice of toast, English muffins or pancakes come with dishes from the Sniper Scramble Bar (four eggs, American cheese, house potatoes) and a choice of three toppings, drawn from spinach, avocado, salsa, red peppers, onions, tomatoes, jalapeños, bacon and spicy chorizo. You can also choose turkey bacon, grilled chicken or grilled steak.

Then, there’s the No Toro Breakfast Burger, in which a burger and a breakfast collide on that brioche bun — a patty and cheddar from one side of the fence, bacon and a fried egg from the other, served with skinny fries. I guess you could ask for pancakes as well, if you ask real nice. Making it a kind of amazing combination.

A mile to so down Artesia Boulevard, we come upon the Off Street Cafe (11020 Artesia Blvd., Artesia 562-402-9665,, which isn’t so much off the street as it is in a corporate complex, where it’s clearly large enough to feed one and all. (One of the streets bordering the restaurant is Business Circle.)

Indeed, the first thing you notice about the Off Street is the size of the outdoor patio, which surrounds the place to a degree where the restaurant is barely visible within. And if you do venture within, there’s much more restaurant to be found — this “American Diner” is a big joint.

There’s a big menu to match. I counted 21 egg dishes, seven “Hearty Specialties,” seven “Off Street Lites” and nine “Pancakes, French Toast & Waffles.” The depth of the menu allows you to meander from the Zen simplicity of two eggs any style, to the far more diet-challenging fried chicken on a homemade waffle with bourbon maple syrup, a California-style chorizo burrito, an egg white and ground turkey “healthy” scramble (with brown rice as a side!), and a Breakfast BLT made with a fried egg.

On the side dishes, you’ll notice low-fat cottage cheese right next to two house-made biscuits and gravy — the alpha and omega of dietary options. I lean toward the biscuits for me, cottage cheese is the dairy version of kale.

After four years, I couldn’t stand the stuff. To avoid oat burnout, make sure to vary your toppings! Any nut butter, fruit, dried fruit, yogurt, nut, seed, or jam is fair game. If you’re looking for some new, out-of-the-box breakfast ideas, a breakfast bowl might be the thing for you. In this category, almost anything goes. When I’m making a savory bowl, I top rice, farro, or cauliflower rice with a soft-boiled egg, vegetables (leftover roasted Brussels sprouts, butternut squash, cauliflower, etc) and a flavorful sauce like pesto or tzatziki. My sweet bowls vary widely. Sometimes I’m in the mood for chia pudding or a smoothie bowl. On other days, I’ll top quinoa with almond milk, cinnamon, and fresh fruit and call it a meal.

Quick Bread Breakfast Recipes

Moist, comforting, and lightly sweet, quick bread is a delectable breakfast option. In the summer, I almost always have individual slices of zucchini bread in my freezer. In the fall and winter, pumpkin and banana bread take its place. Enjoy a thick slice of your favorite quick bread on its own, or top it with a dollop of Greek yogurt and seasonal fruit for extra staying power.

Pancake & Waffle Breakfast Ideas

Pancakes and waffles may not be something you can whip up every morning of the week, but unlike their cousin French toast, these breakfast recipes keep well if you make them ahead and freeze them. So double your weekend batch of pancakes or waffles, and freeze the leftovers for busy mornings! When you’re ready to eat, pop them in the toaster or microwave to thaw.

I’m a diehard fan of avocado toast, but hummus, ricotta, and nut butter are good starting points for making delicious toast too.

When I was growing up, chocolate chip muffins were a breakfast staple in our house. Muffins are still one of my favorite ways to start the day, but now, I make my morning muffins a bit healthier, using whole grain flour, fruit mix-ins, and natural sweeteners like maple syrup whenever possible. Like other healthy breakfast baked goods, muffins and scones freeze well. I like to keep a frozen stash on hand at all times!

Fox Run Cafe Reopens with New Breakfast and Lunch Menu

Opening a restaurant is hard — any restaurateur will tell you that. Opening a restaurant during a pandemic adds another layer of uncertainty, frustration and changing regulations that make the endeavor even more difficult. But, if a restaurant can get through a pandemic, it can likely take any future challenges in stride. Since it first opened in March 2020, Fox Run Cafe has experienced more challenges than normal in its first year. After closing for a month to refocus, they are now open with a new breakfast and lunch menu that brings lighter, fresh fare to the Congress Park neighborhood.

When Lucien Reichert formed the concept of Fox Run Cafe, he wanted the focus to be on hospitality and making guests feel welcome. The name of the restaurant comes from his family’s vacation home in Steamboat Springs — located on a street named Fox Run — that always welcomed friends and family with open arms and an open kitchen. “We’d always have our friends up for weekends and holidays and it was always so welcoming. My mom would be cooking food for everyone and made everyone feel so comfortable. I wanted to evoke that same feeling with the restaurant,” said Reichert.

Upon walking into the quaint restaurant, you’ll be greeted by an employee who will let you know that you can place your order at the counter and sit at any open table. “There’s nothing worse than going into a restaurant and feeling stupid or unwelcome,” said Reichert. The space is small but boasts a large garage door that can be opened on nice days that makes the space feel more open. Reichert is a Denver native and fell in love with the Congress Park neighborhood several years ago.

“It feels less developed and more authentic over here compared to some of the neighborhoods with big development projects going on,” he said. He hopes that Fox Run will become a neighborhood staple and that regulars from some of the neighboring hotspots like Machete, Cerebral Brewing and Lula Rose will begin to come to Fox Run on a regular basis. “It’s hard to build up your customer base during a pandemic. Most people have been focused on going to their favorite restaurants to try to help them stay in business, not go to brand new ones,” he explained.

The menu at Fox Run is refreshing and simple. Reichert experimented with baking sourdough throughout the closures and serves it as toast with toppings like whipped feta, honey and pistachios ($8), scrambled eggs, cream fraiche and chives ($7) and avocado with grapefruit chermoula ($9). You can also enjoy the sourdough on the corned beef reuben ($15) consisting of braised cabbage, provolone and thousand island dressing. The breakfast burrito ($12) is a home run made with scrambled eggs, cheddar, vegetarian green chili, fried potatoes and your choice of bacon or sausage all wrapped in a flour tortilla then grilled to crispy perfection. The fried chicken sandwich ($13) was an unexpected menu item that customers loved so much during the dine-in closure that Reichert decided to keep it on the menu. “The plan from the beginning was to adapt to what the customers wanted, so that’s what we’re doing,” he said.

Eventually, Fox Run hopes to stay open for happy hour but for now you can enjoy brunch cocktails like cold brew whiskey ($10), spiked house lemonade ($9), a bloody ($9) and a paloma ($9). Fox Run also has a unique take on a bloody called “bloody mary has no clothes” ($9) that is a strained version of the bloody with a lighter mouthfeel and less pulp than the traditional bloody.

Next time you find yourself in the Congress Park area, Fox Run is worth a stop, even if it’s just for a piece of hot and crispy griddled banana bread and a coffee. Once you go, though, you may want to stay awhile longer and enjoy the hospitality.
