Photos of all things food and drink from The Daily Meal

A Mister Softee truck parked in New York City.

The Daily Meal's editors, contributors, and readers dig into some pretty great restaurants, festivals, and meals. There's not always enough time to give a full review of a restaurant or describe in depth why a place, its food, and the people who prepare it are noteworthy, so Snackshot of the Day does what photographs do best, rely on the image to do most of the talking.

Today's Snackshot is of a Mister Softee truck in New York City. The legendary ice cream truck is a staple on the streets in the summer. The company started in Philadelphia in 1956, but now operates in 15 states. The soft serve ice cream towers on a cone and looks best when covered in rainbow sprinkles. So this summer listen for the Mister Softee jingle in your neighborhood when the temperatures start to rise.

Make National Ice Cream Day a Treat With NYC Ice Cream Trucks

Ice cream is as American as apple pie, all the way back to our Founding Fathers’ love for the cool and sweet treat.

And, the third Sunday in July marks our celebration of National Ice Cream Day which, is so popular that the holiday falls during National Ice Cream Month.

With so many options to indulge in, check out these NYC ice cream trucks that’ll make you scream for ice cream!

Van Leeuwen takes pride in that mission statement. Along with a big scoop of all-natural ingredients, happiness and healthiness can go hand-in-hand. So, you can feel good while enjoying National Ice Cream Day.

Started in 2008, Van Leeuwen’s eye-catching yellow truck has been cruising the streets of New York, serving scrumptious dishes and cones of classic flavors like cookies and cream and the “holy trinity” of ice cream flavors (chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla) and unique creations like “carrot cake doughnut” and “peanut butter brownie chip.” Plus, Van Leeuwen offers vegan options as well, so no matter your diet, you can enjoy a cool treat on a hot summer day.

And, Van Leeuwen knows how to feed a crowd. With ice cream catering, their trucks are perfect for branded promotions. In 2019, they partnered with Stuart Weitzman for the luxury footwear designer’s “Dare To Daryl” campaign upon the launch of their “Daryl” sneaker line.

Utilizing a branded truck, complimentary Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream inspired by Daryl’s eye-catching vintage color palette was served to over 6,000 customers.

Since 2010, Melt Bakery has sought to create the world’s best ice cream sandwiches and serve them with a smile.

From “The Elvis” (peanut butter cookies with banana ice cream) to “The Lovelett” (red velvet melt-cakes with cream cheese ice cream), this Vendy Award winner for “Best Dessert” is celebrated for their outrageous and adventurous creations.

And, last summer they served their homemade desserts at that year’s U.S. Open, where thousands of attendees were able to sample the “Evil Twin” (chocolate chip cookies with chocolate ice cream) and “The Cinnamax” (snickerdoodle cookies with cinnamon ice cream).

Italian ices are a New York dessert staple and Andy’s Italian Ices are as iconic in The Big Apple as The Statue of Liberty. Founded in 2009, Andy’s Italian Ices serves a mouth-watering variety of 35 water-ice, crème-ice, and sugar-free flavors.

One of the most popular dessert trucks in NYC, Andy’s Italian Ices is also known for its gourmet coffee and espresso bar (along with fresh fruit smoothies and frozen coffee drinks). So, when you’re ordering a cup of their iconic “USA Rainbow” or “Sicilian Cannoli” on National Ice Cream Day, make sure to also grab a cool iced latte, macchiato, or cappuccino.
